If you find evidence of rodents around you, there are measures you can take to put an end to the problem. GEMPLER'S has solutions to make rodent control easy. Read on to debunk the myths and get rid of pests for good.

Myth #1: Poison is more effective than a trap

A multiple-tactic approach to control rodents is the ideal way to keep pests away from your property and ensure long-term success. The most effective program incorporates rodent traps, baits and repellents. It's appropriate to use both traps and poison baits to deal with the current rodent population and repellents for potential future infestations.

Recommendation: Use a combination of methods for maximum rodent control.

Myth #2: Poison (bait) dehydrates rodents and makes them leave the area in search of water.

Rodent baits, also called rodenticides, come in pellet or block form. They are either anticoagulants, which can take several days to work, or fast-acting non-anticoagulant baits, which are lethal in one to two days.

There are different active ingredients among the anticoagulants, but they all work in the same manner. These baits reduce the blood clotting ability of the rodent and damage its capillaries, resulting in death from internal bleeding, not dehydration.

There are three non-anticoagulant baits. Bromethalin is a nerve toxicant that causes respiratory distress; cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is toxic to rodents in massive doses; and zinc phosphide that releases toxic phosphine gas in the stomach and leads to cardiovascular collapse.
Recommendation: Use a rotation of baits for maximum rodent control. Rotating baits helps prevent rodents from developing resistance to anticoagulants or a preference to the flavor or texture of a particular bait. An effective bait rotation strategy includes baits with different active ingredients and at least one non-anticoagulant bait.

Myth #3: Rats carry more diseases than mice

All rodents pose serious health risks through transmission of diseases, including the deadly Hantavirus. The house mouse is the most common health pest because it carries a protein in its blood that can trigger asthma and allergies in susceptible people.

Key Differences Mice Rats
Weight 1 oz. 5-9+ oz.
Body Slender with pointy noses Sleek with blunt nose
Droppings ¼ inch ½ to ¾ inch
Eating Habits Nibble a little at a time Consume most at one feeding
Tendencies Curious with new objects More cautious
Travel Only 10-30 ft. from nest Range 25-150 ft. from nest

Recommendation: If you have mice, place traps a couple feet apart, but if you have rats, the traps should be 15 to 20 feet apart. NOTE: A common mistake is to underestimate the extent of the problem and, consequently, use insufficient resources to take care of it.

Myth #4: Rodents are only a problem if you see them

Both mice and rats can cause extensive damage to dwellings by gnawing on wiring, furniture, appliance cords, structural frames and more, while their waste products can contaminate food and feed as well as floors and counter surfaces throughout a building. They can also cause problems by burrowing around underground foundations—all places you may never actually see.

Recommendation: If you suspect there are rodents present, the first step is to inspect the premises for signs of them. You will also want to pinpoint locations that should be cleaned up and problem spots within the building that need to be rodent-proofed.

Common Signs: In a residence, search for droppings, gnaw marks and hair, shredded paper or cloth, and listen for scratching or high squeaking sounds, particularly at night; in an agricultural facility, look for scattered feed or damaged feed bags, droppings, gnaw marks and hair, and shredded paper or cloth. Droppings are found along regularly traveled paths, near nesting sites, by food caches, or other areas rodents visit.

Myth #5: Once you've gotten rid of rodents, they're gone for good

Cleanup is key. Sanitation for rodent control involves both removal of food sources and elimination of nesting areas. Mice and rats will feed on trash, uneaten or improperly stored pet food, grains and cereals in boxes, fruit left on the counter, bird seed knocked out of feeders or not properly stored, and other sources of food.

Recommendation: The most effective long-term solution is to keep rodents out in the first place. Measures such as sealing entry points prevent mice and rats from gaining entry to a building. Doors, windows and screens should fit snug without gaps, while cracks and openings in the building's exterior should be sealed. Fix leaky faucets and pipes to remove standing water.
