Frequently Asked Questions About Rust Converter

Our Product Support Specialists have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about Rust Converter. Read below for answers to common questions about application, storage, cleanup and more.

What is Rust Converter?

Rust Converter is a synthetic polymeric formula that converts existing rust into a moisture free, black protective coating. Not only does it eliminate existing rust, but it seals out moisture to prevent the possibility of future rust formation and corrosion. Surfaces protected with this primer and an oil-based paint resist the effects of weather, sunlight, rain and even salt spray without peeling or cracking as long as the oil based paint is maintained per manufacturer's recommendations. Rust Converter provides an excellent base primer for oil base and epoxy paints. This easy-to-use product is the first step in providing long-term protection of steel and iron surfaces.

Does Rust Converter have a shelf life?

Yes. Paint-on and Sprayable Rust Converter must be used within 9 months from the date of purchase. Aerosol Rust Converter must be used within 12 months. The shelf life applies to the product even if it has not been opened.

What is the coverage area for one gallon of Rust Converter?

One gallon of Paint-on Rust Converter will cover approximately 500 square feet of a smooth, non-porous surface.

One gallon of Sprayable Rust Converter will cover approximately 300 square feet.

One can of Aerosol Spray-on Rust Converter will cover approximately 24 square feet.

NOTE: Irregular, porous or textured surfaces may require more coats.

What objects can Rust Converter be used on?

Metal buildings, cars and trucks, machinery, gates, tanks and farm equipment. Rust Converter works on any rusty iron or steel object.

Can Rust Converter be applied to a wood stove?

No. It is not considered to be heat resistant.

Can Rust Converter be applied to a non-rusty surface?

No. Rust Converter should only be applied to the rusted areas, not the whole surface. After the Rust Converter has completely cured, it is recommended to wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove all excess Rust Converter before you apply the oil-based paint. Rust Converter will glaze coat the non-rusted areas causing the paint not to adhere to those areas as well.

Can Rust Converter be used on Galvanized Steel?

Yes, as long as there is rust present! Galvanized is defined as a piece of metal that is coated with zinc to prevent corrosion.

How should you store Rust Converter?

Ideally, Rust Converter should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight. It should be protected from freezing or temperatures above 100°F. Failure to follow storage instructions will cause this product to gel and become unusable.

What is the optimal temperature at which Rust Converter should be applied?

Rust Converter should be applied when the air and surface temperature is between 50 and 100°F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or in very damp conditions.

What preparation is needed before Rust Converter is applied?

Remove large rust and scale particles with a wire brush, hammer or sandpaper. Then clean the surface thoroughly to remove dirt, dust and grease. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying Rust Converter.

What personal protective equipment is recommended when applying?

Goggles and gloves are recommended because it may cause eye and skin irritation. It may also stain your skin. Also, if allowed to dry on your clothes, it will stain.

Is Rust Converter U.S.D.A. approved?

No. Do not use Rust Converter where it will be in contact with foods or human water supply. You may use the Rust Converter inside a tank, but you must paint over it with a paint that is resistant to the contents in the tank.

Can a sprayer be used to apply Rust Converter?

Yes. Our Sprayable Rust Converter is ideal for use with automotive HVLP or airless sprayers. Requires three coats for optimum coverage. One gallon covers 300 sq. ft.

It will take approximately 20–60 minutes for it to dry to a smooth, dark finish. To ensure complete transformation of rusty surfaces, apply a second coat. Allow 48 hours of cure time before the application of the finished paint coat (humid conditions may vary drying time). For long-lasting protection, the cured rust converter coating should be sealed with two coats of high-quality oil-based paint. No other primer is required.

Why is a high-quality oil-based paint recommended for a top sealant?

An oil-based paint is considered to be resistant to weather and rain.

How many coats of Rust Converter should be applied on the rusty surface?
