pH Meters

What is pH?
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic something is.
It is measured on a logarithmic scale of 0-14. A pH reading
above 7 is considered basic, while a pH below 7 is acidic.
A reading of 7 is neutral. For each unit change in pH, there
is a 10-fold change in the concentration of acidity. For
example, a pH of 5 is 100 times more acidic than a pH of
7.
How do you select a pH meter?
There are many different types of pH meters available.
Decide what you will be using your pH meter primarily for
and how accurate you need your pH measurements to be. Then
select what features are important to you from the following
list:
Replaceable Sensor - Sensors are a wearing part
of the pH meter. Replaceable sensor pH meters allow you
to replace the sensor instead of replacing the whole meter
when the sensor goes bad.
Dry Store Sensor - Some pH meters need to have the
sensor kept moist at all times. Dry store sensors eliminate
the hassle of keeping water in the cap of you pH meter.
Push-button Calibration - All pH meters need to be
calibrated to maintain their accuracy. Push-button calibration
pH meters simply need to have the CAL button pressed while
in the calibration solution, where dial calibration pH
meters need to have the value dialed in with a small screwdriver.
Glass-bulb Electrode - This indicates the type of
sensor on the pH meter. Glass-bulb or glass-plate electrodes
are more fragile than the plastic polymer electrodes. Glass
bulbs can, however, take a better reading of low ion concentrations
found in distilled or rain water.
