Comments about Carhartt B342 Ripstop Pants:

              Product update from 6/16/2012

I've now have had these pants for almost two years and I have to say they have been very good durable pants. The rip stop has come in handy as when chain from a chain saw came lose and slapped across my leg... the outer layer has a tooth size hole, inner layer just slightly marked and had to look very closely to see any evidence of chain hitting my leg (red mark where the chain hit). Another non rip stop pants and it would have been a different story for my leg and likely a trip to the ER.

These have been my main and only work pants for home and have taken much abuse. Welding, masonry, tree cutting, carpentry, plumbing, yard work, gardening and so on (whatever needs doing I do it myself). I spend a lot of my time on my knees while working and these pants has held up to it.

While the pants do show wear they are still very usable and not worn out yet, a few places where outer layer has worn thin but not any worn through yet. At least another year worth of wear still in them. Every other pants I've worn for working in has had the knees wear out and rip apart in a few months.

At first I didn't like the crotch to waist band length but I have become used to it and now don't really notice it. I had thought I would not buy these again but now I've changed my mind seeing how well they last.

Pocket design still have to be careful about losing things from the pockets. This is the reason for removing 1 star from the ratings. First time wearing these pants I went out with my wife and every time I sat down my car keys kept falling out the pockets. I know eventually what ever I had in the pockets would fall out un-noticed and be lost.

Comments about Carhartt B342 Ripstop Pants:

Purchased four pairs which lasted for two Minnesota landscaping seasons. I like the flapped cargo pockets because they keep dirt and debris from my cell phone. Recently purchased four more and discovered two of the four were relaxed fit which is different from the "work pant" fit which I was accustomed too. I prefer the work pant fit which is more snug and wish it was part of the description in the catalogue.

Comments about Carhartt B342 Ripstop Pants:

Does has more room in the crotch area, doesn't look like it but doesn't bind with bending or stooping. Crotch to waist band lenght to me seems a little short, I would almost call them hip huggers. As can be seen in the ad photos the rear lenght is longer then the front lenght. To me it seems the front lenght is a little too short and gives me the feeling of needing to keep pulling the pants up. The double front does add weight and makes the legs feel hotter and with walking feels like instead of the knees bending the pants are being pulled down (this may improve as with wear it might break in and knees be more flexable). For me this is acceptable as I'm very tough on front of my pants from around knee area upward as I spend a lot of time working on my knees with what i'm working on across my legs. I will try a different pants next purchase, the front lenght is annoying to me. Perhaps I will get used to the short front but I feel I shouldn't need to get used to a pair of pants, they should fit me. For reference i'm just over 6 foot 2 inches and weigh 250 pounds. I'm not the biggest guy around nor the smallest either. I've worn these out as casual wear, cargo pockets are big enough to hold the paper back sized kindle that's inside of a padded carrying case. Cargo pockets are angled top and one side fits all the way in but not on the other side. Rear pockets have little room for a wallet and are not very deep, feels like if bending over a wallet might get pushed out. Side pockets while roomier will lose things out of them while sitting. Good pants for working in but keep wallet, car keys, and money somewhere else while activly working or sitting. (Pocket design seems typical for most blue jeans) Because of the short front lenght and pocket design: "No, I would not recommend this to a friend". But otherwise they seem to be good pants. Time will tell.
