Being a professional weed control entity, our staff really put this tool to the test. We found that it works best on early stages of weed growth--mostly rosettes. For those dealing with a lot of weeds, like tansy ragwort, this is perfect and really saves you from a sore back! The handle would be better if the material were different, but it can likely be replaced with another material if you have issues with the wood handle.

This weeder will only work on small weeds with tap roots less than 5" deep. This is because the prongs on this clever invention are only 2.5" deep. I constantly either missed the root or broke it. Only 1 in 50 tries resulted in actually getting the entire tap root. The design is good but I believe one or two larger models need to be made to cover the larger weeds. With practice I might get better but my first impression is that this tool does a better job at airation than it does weeding.

          Comments about Grampa's Weeder:

I've had two of these. The wooden handle on the first broke. I assumed I could replace it (hopefully with something more durable), but I couldn't find anything. Fortunately the maker sent me a whole new unit (though all I needed was a handle). Unfortunately, this unit also broke. This time the pry lever broke off. It seems to be made of pot metal or somthing really soft. In both cases I was trying to uproot a big, well-established thistle in fairly hard, dry soil. The design is great, but the materials just aren't up to my needs.

          Comments about Grampa's Weeder:

I've found Grampa's weed puller very effective for removing dandelions from my yard. Sometimes the root breaks off in the ground. Sometimes it comes up with the weed. To grab any remaining root with the puller, it's helpful to lean the puller in a way where the forks are more flat, so the root is not between the forks.
The head loosened up a little with use. So I had to take the screw out of the head. Then reset the head more tightly on the handle, then reset the screw in a fresh spot. This made the cast head piece much tighter on the handle.
Like anything else, the tool is not indestructible. But the cast head piece is better than any plastic one. It is strong enough for it's intended use. If you really want to break it, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out a way to do it. Just use it as a post hole digger.

Worked pretty good in soft ground. But with hard ground, because of a bubble in the cast , it broke at the base of the bar

I recently was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis and was concerned how to take care of the weeds. Well, your product helped do the trick! My neighbor saw me using it and inquired about it and so she plans to purchase one for herself as I told her "nothing to it!" I'm happy that the components are well made and able to withstand a lot of usage.

              Comments about Grampa's Weeder:

Tool worked well until the handle broke. I sent an email to the tool manufacturer to make use of the "Lifetime Warranty". Several years went by with no response. So the lifetime warranty is useless. Fortunately, I was able to make a decent handle that is going to be resistant to breaking and installed it.
I did not purchase the tool from Gemplers, but the seller should not be responsible to warranty the item anyway.
Tool may not work well on weeds that are not clumpy but have thin stalks and roots.
