Changing a Tractor Tire - Dismounting
|

| We
have put together a series on how to change a tractor
tire yourself, eliminating the need to have a service
truck come out. You will find step-by-step illustrations
and instructions on dismounting and mounting the tire,
removing and installing liquid ballast, and safety

1.
Stabilizing Tractor
Park tractor on solid level surface (concrete floor
is best). Block front and rear wheels, raise tractor
with jack and support with jack stand. Make sure
tractor will not roll forward, backward or side to
side when tire is being changed.
|

Larger tires may require larger irons and may require
two people.

2.
Bead Breaking (outside bead.)
For rim with valve stem on outside, position the
rim with valve stem on top. Remove valve core to
deflate tire. After tire is deflated, drive an iron
between bead and lip of rim. This will loosen the
bead from rim lip and make it easier to install Bead
Bustertool. After loosening an area about 6" wide,
insert the Bead
Buster and drive between bead and rim flange.
Lock Bead
Buster to rim. Using a 1 1/4" socket and
a 1/2" drive ratchet, turn screw head and force
bead off rim seat. Repeat procedure to loosen inside
bead (shown in picture at left).

Tube Inspection
If tube is stuck or rusted fast to rim, use one
tire spoon to raise tire bead and a second spoon
to pry tube up and loose from rim. This may need
to be repeated around the entire rim.
30" Curved
Tire Spoon, 11/16" stock
Curved end of spoon helps lift bead over rim flange

4.
Bead Lubrication
After both beads are removed from bead seat area,
lubricate tire bead and bead seat area with a suitable
lubricant.
|

NOTE: Larger tires may require large irons and may
require two people.
|
5.
Removing Tire from Rim (outside bead)
Lock the wheel with valve hole on top. Push the
bottom of the tire inward. Insert long tire irons
under the bead at the top of the rim and pry bead
over lip of rim. Keep tire irons close together;
this will make prying easier and help prevent bead
damage.
After part of bead is over rim flange, hold iron
in place and remove other iron to pry next portion
of bead over rim. Do not pry too large a portion
at once, it will be hard to pry and may tear the
bead.
Maintain constant grip and pressure on the tire
irons at all times. The irons may spring back with
pressure if your grip is released. Work your way
around the rim until the outside bead of the tire
is completely over the rim.

6.
Removing Tube
Tube can be removed from tire after the outside
bead is completely over the rim. Start at the bottom
and pull tube outward. Work your way up either side
of the tire until the tube is completely removed. |
|
7.
Removing Tire from Rim (inside bead)
Insert two tire irons under bead on side of tire.
Apply pressure on both irons and pull back on one
iron to move bead over lip of rim. Continue around
rim until inside bead of tire is completely over
the rim. NOTE: To avoid bead damage, do not pry too
large a portion at once as you move around rim. |
|
8.
Cleaning Rim
Once the tire is removed from the rim, wire brush
rust from rim and clean surface of debris. Check
rim for cracks on bead flanges. Also check area where
rim is mounted to center plate. Make sure there are
no sharp burrs on rim flange; these burrs could cut
tube during installation or removal.
After rim has been cleaned, apply a thin coat of
rust preventative to the bead seat area of rim.
9
lb. Rim Rust Preventative
- Grease-type coating keeps rust and scale from
forming on the rim surface.
- Stops the "freezing" or "bonding" between
tire bead and rim seat surface for easier removal
of tire the next time.
- Easy to use, just remove all liquids and rust
from rim and brush on a thin coat before mounting
tire.
